The Intangible Cultural Heritage Impacted in Changes
The ancient Silk Road started westward from an ancient capital Chang'an (present-day Xi'an) of China and reached far to Europe via south and central Asia at a total length of 7,000 km with a section of nearly 4,000 km in China. Along the road open to the world as a window, ancient China could be blended and interacted with civilizations of the West and together contributed to development of the world civilizations. Also, it has been long reputed as a bridge for trade exchanges, a canal for cultural communication, or a link of science and technology between the East and the West thanks to its unmeasurable roles in promoting economic development, social civilization and technological progress for the countries along the road, where the intangible cultural heritages take key places in the Chinese cultures and also form a distinctive part of the world's repository of intangible cultural heritages.
The vast expanse of land in the five provinces and autonomous regions of northwest China, Shaaxi, Gansu, Ningxia, Qinghai and Xinjiang, are inhabited by as many as over 20 ethnic groups including Han, Hui (Chinese Muslim), Uygur, Tibetan, Mongolian, Sala, Dongxiang, Bao'an, Yugu, and Kazak, with a long history and brilliant ethnic cultures, particularly the colorful orally inherited, intangible cultural heritages of ethnic minorities. Local cultures are represented by the "flowery styled" ethnic songs of the eight groups popularly circulated in the provinces and regions of Gansu, Qinghai, Ningxia and Xinjiang; the folk songs in north Shaanxi and east Gansu, and the graceful ethnic dances known as "Feast", "Stepping", "Rice Transplanting" and "Peace Drum"; superb process and workmanship of Regong Tibetan artworks, knitting, sculpture, paper cut artwork, and embroidery; and folk carnival. All of these cultural elements showcase the wisdom of the ethnic people in northwest China and the diversity of the Chinese cultures.
In the context of globalization, due to in-coming of foreign cultures and ways of life as well as the cultural outlooks and values of the West, in addition to improvement in living standards of the society and changes of the lifestyle, the intangible cultural heritages along the Silk Road of northwest China, which can be the spiritual home of local ethnic groups, have been severely impacted. Some time-honored traditional cultures have been increasingly abandoned or gradually lost, and some others have been progressively belittled, ignored or distorted. Because of such factors as local natural condition, the people's religious belief, and historical changes, the regionally and ethnically unique folk arts, which have been created by the industrious and intelligent ethnic people of northwest China, are now rapidly missing and on the edge of extinction. Consequently, quite a few workmanships die out; a large number of folk implements disappear; there lacks a system for education on intangible cultural heritages and training to relevant talents, with less accessible inheriting channels; fewer people have recognized the in-dept values of such intangible cultural heritages as customs, social etiquettes, costumes and ornaments for drama art performances, and traditional processes. Moreover, along the Silk Road in northwest China, orally inherited literature is naturally lost, and only a handful of folk artists with certain skills in traditional arts still live, leaving few successors. Traditional drama performance art is gradually losing its popularity, for instance, the donkey hide shadow drama in east Gansu and the Chinese Muslim musical instruments in Ningxia, the performers and the players boasted over 100 repertoires at the beginning of the founding of New China (1949), but now the number of the repertoires are reduced to merely some 20. What's more, "The Tang Melody", a palace music of the time was once as pleasant to the ears as the sound of a jade pendant, then popular in the capital Chang'an, is now gone with the death of the last performer; the paper cut art is "withering away" at the speed of "snow-white pear blossoms fade overnight from the spring breeze"; and the ethnic minority languages proper to northwest China, such as Dongxiang, Bao'an and Yugu, are being increasingly assimilated, and are endangered.
